CNN: Grammy nominee rises high and fast
» Posted On: February 01, 2009
After a long apprenticeship, it's been an astonishingly fast rise for R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan.
CNN's KJ Matthews talked with Sullivan about her inspirations, who
she's bringing to the Grammys and the mysterious person behind "Bust
Your Windows." The following is an edited version of that interview.
CNN: How would you describe your sound? Jazmine Sullivan:
I can't really describe it; that's the whole thing. Once you hear the
CD, you'll hear that one sound doesn't sound like the next. You know,
I've been influenced by so many different styles and different genres of
music that I felt like that should be represented on my first album, so
when you get it, you get a taste of gospel, jazz, R&B, hip-hop,
reggae, pop ... everything is on there, there's something for everybody
to enjoy. I didn't want to exclude anybody from the album.
CNN:
Let me ask you this: When you saw or heard the other nominees in the
best new artist category who happen to be a little bit more well-known,
was it intimidating? I mean, you got the Jonas Brothers, Katy Perry,
Adele ... Sullivan: Yeah, the Jonas Brothers, specifically. I
didn't even know they were new artists because they are so huge, so, you
know, so after, when my name was called after theirs, I thought, "Wow,
they're new artists, too?" I got a little scared, I tell you that.
But
I'm just so honored to be mentioned to be in the same categories with
such wonderful artists, so I'm looking forward to February and the
Grammys and just being in that atmosphere.
CNN: I was
looking at your background, and I didn't know that you're a protegee of
Missy Elliott. I was thinking to myself, you would think that you would
do rap, but you're this big voice, this soulful voice. You might not
equate that with Missy. Sullivan: Yeah, and a lot of people
don't know that Missy Elliott ... grew up in the church, and she's
really into vocalists. When I met her, was I was about 13 or 14, [and]
she was ecstatic about me. When nobody else was there to support me,
Missy was there, so she's a good friend of mine, and I'm happy to have
her by my side. She's definitely taught me a lot of things.
CNN: So everybody wants to know, the guy behind "Bust Your Windows" -- is there one? Sullivan:
We won't talk about that on camera -- that's an off-camera conversation
-- but it's definitely a song that relates to a lot of women
especially. You know, even if they really haven't busted windows out of
anybody's car, they have wanted to. A lot of women have been through
that, so I'm glad that my music is touching those people
CNN: "Need U Bad" is rising as well. What's the thought process behind that one? Sullivan:
"Need U Bad" ... a lot of men actually pointed out to me that women
don't come out and admit that they made mistakes and say that they
actually need the male, so I think that was kind of cool. I haven't
thought of it like that when I was writing it. So, you know, it's a song
for the fellas, saying that we appreciate them and we need you as much
as you need us.
But on the flip side, I do a song like "Bust Your
Windows," so on the album you have a lot of different perceptions and
everything.
CNN: How old are you? You look like you're 10. Sullivan: I'm 21 years old.
CNN: Success that early, that's sometimes tough for people. Sullivan:
Well, I've been in this industry for a very long time. I started out
when I was 12; I got signed when I was 16, so it wasn't an overnight
success story at all. I put a lot of hard work into it, and this is just
a byproduct of all of that.
CNN: It's great that you write your own music too, because a lot of people don't do that. You have a lot more creative control. Sullivan:
Most definitely, and I've dealt with not having that control when I was
younger and I was signed. I wasn't writing at all, and so I've been
through all of that. So now to be in a position where I write my music,
and I have that control -- it feels so much better.
CNN: All right, the big question: Grammy night. What are you wearing? Who are you bringing? What are you going to be doing? Sullivan: I'm bringing my mother. She's been my rock and my support ever since I was a baby. She was my first huge fan, that what she is.
I
don't know what I'm wearing. I'm trying not to think about that. I want
to perform. Hopefully I can get on stage and I can show everybody who I
am and what I'm about. But I haven't thought about the dress or the
shoes or the hair or anything about that.
CNN: You're just trying to enjoy the moment. Sullivan: Enjoy, yes.

New Single: Lions, Tigers, Bears
» Posted On: January 03, 2009
In Lions, Tigers, Bears Jazmine is relating the classic fable (The Wizard of Oz) to her life in the music business, Jazmine Sullivan
says "The lions, tigers and bears reference represents my career in the
business. Even though it can be pretty scary and overwhelming at times,
I've been doing it for so long (most of my life) that I can handle
that."
But love, to Sullivan, is another animal: "You can't see,
hear or smell it," she says of the four-letter word that embodies our
deepest emotion. "Lions, Tigers, and Bears" becomes the singer's
third single from her now five-time Grammy nominated debut "Fearless".
Summing up the story behind her third single Sullivan says "Being afraid
of love and everything that goes with it, like not having complete
control of your emotions and putting your heart in someone else's hands
to do with it what they please. Having to pick up the pieces and try
again if things go wrong. (and they do) That's scary. But, in the end
not trying is worse than failing..."

SOB's Performance Review
» Posted On: January 02, 2009
At S.O.B.’s on Monday night she kept her fangs largely hidden, instead
giving herself over to the often gorgeous vintage soul that dominates
her debut album.
Ms. Sullivan has formidable melodic instincts
and writes compact, evocative songs. As a vocalist, though, she’s
capable but indistinct, at times struggling to color in her very sturdy
outlines; in the mid-1960s, when her main influences were last in
fashion, she might have been the third-best singer in a second-tier girl
group. The bigger the note, the raspier and thinner she sounds.
Here
that flimsiness persistently held her back, leaving her performance
just short of potent. The songs at the beginning of her set - the
vindictive “Bust Your Windows,” the anguished “Lions, Tigers &
Bears” - were animated but not quite crisp. During the soft breakdown
toward the end of “One Night Stand,” one of the album’s vocal high
points, Ms. Sullivan got overpowered by her band, which was playing a
firm Motown strut.
Though she performed most of her album, Ms.
Sullivan notably, and unfortunately, skipped its emotional poles - the
domestic-abuse tale “Call Me Guilty” and the lighthearted “Switch!” -
opting instead for the unmemorable “Dream Big” and “After the
Hurricane.”
Bursting out of a tight white tuxedo shirt underneath
a black overall dress and sporting a fingerless black glove on her
right hand, she was a combination of tender and tough; at times she sang
while clutching a white towel, which she used to wipe her forehead
between songs as a prizefighter would between rounds.
Certainly
Ms. Sullivan would like to be a contender, and on “In Love With Another
Man” she truly sounded like one. It’s a wrenching, unadorned ballad
about trading stability for risk, and as she moved through the lyric,
singing with admirable intensity, she slid more and more off the beat
until it wasn’t clear if she could hear the music at all. When
unraveled, she sounded totally certain.

Jazmine plans to meet Coldplay
» Posted On: January 02, 2009
When five-time Grammy nominee Jazmine Sullivan hits the awards show for the first time this year, she plans to make a beeline for one band only: Coldplay.
"I
am so excited to meet them!" Sullivan tells PEOPLE. "I actually want to
do a song with Chris Martin, so maybe somebody will introduce me to
him, or I can slip him an album and he can listen!"
The R&B
songstress, who earned the highly-coveted best new artist nod, still
can't believe her good fortune. "When they called the Jonas Brothers, I
started getting nervous. I was like, 'Man ... they're huge!' I didn't
even know they were new artists!" But with mom right by her side - "I
must have grabbed her arm so hard she probably still has red marks!" -
she learned she had actually received not just one, but five
nominations. "It was surreal," says the Philly-native, who texted mentor
Missy Elliott as soon as she heard. "I've been working for this my
whole life and to see it finally pay off is just wonderful."
Elliott
couldn't be more proud of her protégé. "In the church world we say
someone who sings with such magnitude is 'a beast.' Well I guess this
beast has been unleashed!" Elliott says.
So, if all goes well, where does one find room for five Grammys?
"My
brother plays tennis, so he has hundreds of trophies from when he was
younger in our computer room and it takes up all the space," Sullivan
says with a laugh. "I'll move his to the floor and put mine there!"
